7 Essential Tips for Women Entrepreneurs

What happened when top women business leaders from around the globe gathered to discuss breaking down gender barriers in business? Dell’s Women Entrepreneur Network event – a three-day conference recently held in Rio de Janeiro — involved inspiring stories of successful women entrepreneurs. But more important, was its focus on helping the aspiring women entrepreneurs in attendance create success stories of their own.

Small business analyst Laurie McCabe, co-founder of The SMB-Group and regular contributor to Small Business Computing, attended the event and moderated a panel there. Here she offers the seven most compelling tips she that took away from the experience.


Entrepreneurs are a rare breed. Although start-up activity has been on the upswing, just 0.34 of the adults in the U.S. for example (or 340 out of 100,000) started a new business each month in 2009, according to the Kaufman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity. Women entrepreneurs are even more exceptional, accounting for just 29% of all U.S. businesses, as indicated in a recent American Express study.
