If you can dig your way out of your paper-cluttered office long enough to read this article, Xerox believes it will be worth your time and effort. Watch out for paper cuts though. The company recently released a new addition to its WorkCentre line of multi-function devices — the all-business printers that also copy, scan and fax.
The WorkCentre 4118 is a desktop printer with a starting price of $799. It’s available in two versions, the monochrome 4118P, which prints and copies, and the 4118X, which, along with copying and monochrome printing, also faxes and scans in color. Pricing for the 4118X starts at $1,199.
The big news, according to Xerox, is that the 4118 offers capabilities not normally found at this price level. “This multi-function printer gives small businesses the extra features they want and need to contain costs, increase productivity and improve efficiency at a price they can afford,” said Peter Haldeman, a Xerox product manager.

He added that the printer is well suited for cost-conscious small businesses that generate a lot of paper and that want to improve their work flow and document management.
“The 4118 lets companies efficiently scan letters, contracts, invoices and other hard copy documents and turn them into electronic files,” he said.
“This makes it easier to organize documents and requires less physical space.”
Those advanced features (available in both configurations) include:
•ID Card Copy: Copies both sides of an ID card, driver’s license or medical insurance card onto one side of a page. “This is ideal for a medical office. It saves time and reduces paper waste,” said Haldeman.
•Book Copy: An adjustable platen to accommodate copying books.
•Edge Erase: A copy feature that eliminates the marks left behind when you Xerox documents with three-ring binder holes.
•Margin Shift: A copy feature that shifts images and text over so you can use a three-hole punch without damaging the content.
•Duplex Printing and Copying: Print or copy on both sides of one page.
•Document Management Software: The 4118 includes two software programs — Nuance’s Paperport SE and OmniPage SE. Paperport lets you manage and organize scanned images and documents while OmniPage converts the pages you scan into electronic documents into the computer where you can then edit.
The printer is also designed to let you collate pages, handle transparencies and create non-stapled booklets.
The standard features include up to 18 page-per-minute printing and copying, print resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi, a copy resolution of 600 x 600 dpi and one 550-page paper tray (the 4118X comes standard with a 40-sheet automatic document feeder).
The 4118 also offers two optional features: a second 550-page paper tray that sells for $295 and a network kit that makes it possible for everyone on the network to use the same printer. The kit sells for $199.
