IBM announced its new, affordable ThinkPad R Series notebook computer, the R31, with new security features that are designed to help users protect information. IBM also announced two additional ThinkPad notebooks, the ultraportable X23 and a refresh of the thin and light T23, as well as two new NetVista desktop models with faster Intel processors.
Select new ThinkPad R Series models now feature for the first time the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem. IBM says that its Embedded Security Subsystem can help protect information over both wireless and wired networks. Available on select ThinkPad and NetVista models, the security subsystem includes two parts: the IBM embedded security chip and IBM Client Security Software (available by download).
IBM now offers its ImageUltra service. ImageUltra is a separately service that is supposed to reduce the costs associated with managing large numbers of personal computers. Select new models of the ThinkPad X23 also include integrated Bluetooth capability. Additionally, IBM introduced optional Solution Packs for the ThinkPad Professional, which consist of selected IBM and third-party accessories and services .
The new ultraportable ThinkPad X Series includes the ThinkPad X23, which weighs only 3.4 pounds and, according to the company, offers a battery life of up to nearly five hours. The new entry-level ThinkPad T23 now includes a CD-ROM drive, a 14.1-inch screen and an Intel 1.2 GHz Pentium III-M processor. According to IBM’s announcement, the ThinkPad T23 prices range from $2449 to $3849. Also, ThinkPad R31 prices range from $1249 to $2399; and ThinkPad X23 prices range from $2149 to $2549.
In desktop computers, IBM announced its new NetVista M41 and NetVistaA22p models that include the Intel Pentium 4 processor running at speeds up to 2.2 GHz. NetVista M41 prices range from $1149 to $1749; and NetVista A22p prices range from $849 to $1899.
