PCmag@Work (Small Business): Why Office 2010 Trumps Google Apps For SMBs, Sometimes

The ability to create more complex spreadsheets in Excel, superior security and better graphics capabililities are among the reasons Lynn suggests the new Office 2010 might be a better bet than Google Apps for many small business.

“Microsoft Office 2010 became available for corporate customers yesterday, bringing with it an extensive set of new features that extend across all of the applications in the suite. One of the most prominent features is the new focus on collaboration and accessibility, which puts it in direct competition with Google Apps for Business and Google Docs.

Office 2010 features Office Web Apps, Microsoft’s first business cloud offering that offers real competition to Google Apps for Business (which continues to gain momentum and mindshare as the cloud-based productivity suite). Although Office Web Apps have yet to roll out, Google recognizes them as a threat; an article posted to the Google Enterprise Blog, not only compares the Office 2010 and Google Docs (the free productivity suite for individuals that is a subset of the Google Apps for Business) and Google Apps for Business, but also gives instruction on making the switch from Office 2003 and 2007 to Google Docs.”
