Wireless Surveillance Cameras: Security Protection, Or Leak?

AllBusiness: Wireless Surveillance Cameras: Security Protection, Or Leak?

Matthew McKenzie comments on a recent article pointing out that poorly secured wireless surveillance cameras could be accessed by anyone over the Internet and even used by thieves to case premises without going near them.

“Surveillance cameras are everywhere these days. Retailers use them, property owners use them, businesses of every shape and size use them. But business owners aren’t the only ones watching.

I already knew that IP surveillance cameras raise some unique security issues. Unlike old-school wired systems, these cameras stream their video over a standard Internet connection. In theory, only the owner of the camera has access to this video footage.

In practice, however, you can drive a truck through the security gaps in a typical IP camera setup.”
