New software and NAS (network attached storage) products will make 2011 a turning point for SMB virtualization, according to one industry spokesperson quoted here. Mah predicts a second wave of implementations from SMBs that gave virtualization a pass the first time around.


“Next year – 2011 – will be the year that small and mid-sized businesses see an increase in the number of available virtualization options, says Eric Courville in a column at Data Center Knowledge. Courville is the chief operating officer of virtualization company VM6 Software, which sells a management solution that helps SMBs set up a complex and highly-available virtualized IT infrastructure without expensive SAN hardware.

The virtualization landscape has changed for the better where SMBs are concerned, noted the industry veteran, who was with Embotics and PlateSpin prior to joining VM6 Software. The technology is no longer the domain of large enterprises with ample budgets and resources. The same vendors and providers that have sprung up to help enterprises realize their virtualization visions have now turned their eyes on the relatively untouched SMBs. Writes Courville…”
